This website provides the reader the following:
Information about the two books I have written: The Hows and Whys of Level Design SE, and The Hows and Whys of the Games Industry.
Free tutorials on Unreal Engine 3 and other topics.
A job section that reports all currently available level design and environment artist jobs in Europe and Northern America.
Three free texture packs.
This website’s goal is to be a general source of help and information
largely, though not exclusively, aimed at Level Designers. As a
professional Level Designer who started out in the amateur mod scene,
I feel that it is important to give something back to the community.
Besides free content, this website also features two books that
can be ordered online.
The Hows and Whys of Level
Design - Second Edition (New!)
Aimed at amateur level designers who wish
to improve their skills.
Covers the design phase, gameplay, as visuals.
It does not explain how to create a room or a light using software. Rather it explains the choices behind why you would want to make a room or a light. It describes the reasoning behind the creation of virtual environments.
Targets level design for all first person shooters and similar action-orientated video games.
Well-illustrated with over a hundred screenshots.
Features interviews with six game industry professionals. |

The Hows and Whys of the Games Industry
Intended for amateurs (programmers, designers, and artists) who wish to ‘break into’ the games industry and who are looking for additional information. It’s also for those who are yet undecided on whether or not to pursue a career in the games industry.
Aims to provide the reader with a honest and objective discourse about the games industry, its pros and cons, and why one would, or would not, want to be active within this industry.
Interviews with over twenty industry professionals on how they got in, what they like, and what they dislike about the games industry.
Attempts to provide the reader with answers to some of the most common questions beginners have; such as how much one can expect to earn, the best way to apply to a studio, and what to expect during a job interview. The book will provide the reader with plenty of tips about what to look for when searching for a job.
